Village groups call upon state, central govts to scrap anti-people policies

Representatives of village groups which met at a meet organised by the Goenchea Xetkarancho Ekvott called upon the state and Union governments to immediately scrap all the anti-people policies with regard to mining, real estate, tourism and industries, which have been causing immense irreversible destruction within the tiny state of Goa.

The call was given by representatives from 58 villages who met on Sunday for an all-day first All Goa Meet of village groups at Margao. Around 130 participants from all the 11 talukas shared their experiences, ideas, perspectives and dreams at the meet which saw the representatives deliberate on various issues related to what was their perspective of the well-being and development of the state and its inhabitants, including water and food, the plight of farmers, tribals and other residents, and other socio-economic and environmental issues.

“Legislators, executive and judiciary are hereby warned that unless they open their eyes, which seem to be blinded presently by greed, fear or otherwise, and act to stem the rapid destruction of the water, land and environment of the state, they shall be held responsible for the resultant sufferings of our children,” a statement said.

The meet also deliberated on the impact of the present policies of the state on the present and future generations with the representatives being mostly critical of these policies.

In particular, the state policies on mining, real estate speculation, land acquisition, tourism and industries were unanimously rejected by the participants, who also brought various instances of what was termed as the unholy nexus between “greedy accumulators of wealth, corrupt bureaucrats and those voted by the people to save Goa” who they alleged were rapidly destroying Goa forever.
