1,500 families benefit from Kanyadaan scheme

PANAJI: More than 1,500 families belonging to economically weaker sections of the society, have availed of benefits of the Kanyadaan scheme in four months.Under this scheme, the state government provides financial assistance amounting to Rs 15,000 for marriage of their daughters.

Sources said that from April 1 to July end this year, there were around 750 beneficiaries from South Goa and 825 in North Goa.

During the last financial year, the number of beneficiaries was just over 400. Perhaps due to awareness of the scheme through integrated child development services (ICDS), the scheme has suddenly gained popularity.

As per the scheme, only two daughters in a family belonging to economically weaker sections, are entitled to the financial assistance. The scheme is implemented by the department of women and childdevelopment.

Among the documents which need to be attached along with the application to the department of women and child development, or routed through ICDS, are residence certificate, marriage certificate, income certificate, etc.

The annual income of the family should not be more than Rs one lakh per annum.
