Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia is expected to make a presentation on the issue of food security to the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by Sonia Gandhi.
Ahluwalia’s presentation is part of the NAC’s extensive consultations as it finalises the Food Security Bill which seeks to give legal rights to the poor to be provided a fixed quantity of rice or wheat at Rs three per kg.
The meeting is scheduled to be held on September 24.There were differing views within the 15-member NAC on bringing the entire population of the country under the public distribution system (PDS).
A section of NAC favoured universalisation of PDS, while others had pointed out the economic costs involved in such a move and pitched for the benefits only for those below the poverty line.
