President Pratibha Patil today called for a fresh approach to agriculture to “enhance its productivity and profitability.”Giving the inaugural speech at the AIMA national convention here, she said “About two-thirds of India’s population lives in the rural areas and shares less than one-third of the country’s GDP.
“It is for this reason that I firmly believe that our rural economy must be integrated into the mainstream.”
She said “I believe that agriculture in India needs a fresh approach to enhance productivity and profitability.”
The sector should have economies of scale through advanced farming techniques, effective distribution systems and industry partnering with agriculture.
The President said it was for sustainable development and to create fair opportunity for every Indian.
“We need honesty and hard work and all stakeholders would have to put in concerted efforts,” Patil said.
